St Pauls Pirates

The St Paul’ s Pirates are a self funded team made up entirely by mates who have enjoyed chancing their arm against some of the big guns of the 7s series over the last 5 seasons. Our team was founded in 2008 after 2 lads decided to turn their empty basement at university into a successful drinking spot named ‘The Pirate Bar’. The team at the time consisted of the current University of Gloucestershire side and Old Patesians RFC players who have since gone on to represent different sides around the South of England including Bracknell, Taunton, Barnstaple, Cornish Pirates and Wellington, but return to play for the Pirates every summer.

This has been one of our most successful seasons entering double the tournaments that we did last season winning 3 (Farnham, North Petherton & Scrum and Bass), runners up in another (Frome), Semi Finalists at West Country (Losing to the Army) and Quarter Finalists at Bournemouth 7s narrowly losing to the unsportingly sober home side Bournemouth RFC! We have achieved all this with a core of the side that was formed back in 2008.

It has been no coincidence that it was 2012 which saw the best results with a more professional approach being taken by players. This is largely down to the hard work of player manager Paddy Dean and injured player coach Daniel Mays who has used his London Broncos u20s coaching experience to the full in organising the team on match days to perform at a high level. We have also been boosted by the introduction of Fijians Seva Naulago and Toots Vakalutukali, who are Taunton based Marines that have chosen to represent the Pirates this season, passing on their extensive 7s knowledge and showcasing their unbelievable skills. Furthermore we have been supported wholeheartedly throughout the summer by 7s Nutrition experts, Premiere Nutrition a young exciting company that has worked tirelessly throughout the summer to get to 7s tournaments up and down the country.

As a team we are proud to be supporting Carly Taylor Fighting Back and Spinal Research to support her and Nelly (her partner), as she continues to inspire us and everyone who knows her.
